CLEVELAND – Week 8 of the NFL season kicked off with the Baltimore Ravens throttling the Miami Dolphins 40-0. It was a game we gave out on WTAM 1100, picking the Ravens (-3), but it still will not count toward our NFL record where we have already hit 63% ATS on the season. “Picks With Nick” is continuing making selections against the spread (for entertainment purposes only, of course) in both college and NFL football.
Following our first season, in which we nailed 54% of the games we selected against the spread (ATS), we are back at it again enjoying another winning season so far. In fact, here’s our numbers through eight weeks of college football and seven weeks of the NFL against the number for full transparency:
CFB: 21-18-2 (54%)
NFL: 19-11 (63%)
Total: 40-29-2 (58%)
Our picks are made against Las Vegas oddsmakers merely helping create football interactions on Facebook and Twitter, as well as online and on-air content for Newsradio WTAM 1100 and WTAM.com.
Similar to last football season, our goal is to win 53% of our picks against the spread. Las Vegas sports books, give us 11/10 odds or -110, so in order to break even in picking games against the spread (ATS) we must win 52.4% of the games we select. Winning 58% of picks ATS would place you among the most elite sports handicappers in the world. We’ll shoot for somewhere between 53% - 58% again this season.
We are again keeping our college and NFL selections separate, but we will update the results weekly with full transparency seeing how we stack up against the Las Vegas oddsmakers. We are coming off a winning first season in which we hit 54% ATS in college football and NFL combined in 2016.
“Picks With Nick” will also feature a radio segment weekly on Newsradio WTAM 1100 discussing our selections.
Below is our full slate of NFL picks featuring five selections ATS for Week 8:

Game: Minnesota Vikings vs. Cleveland Browns
Where: Twickenham, England – Twickenham Stadium
Kickoff: 9:30 pm ET
TV: NFL Network
Spread: Vikings -9.5
Nick’s Pick: Rarely do we like giving 9.5 points to any NFL team…but, let’s be real…the Vikings are playing the Browns. Minnesota is 5-2 on the season, feature a strong defensive unit and seem to be improving with each passing week, yes, even with Case Keenum at quarterback. Meanwhile, the Browns look worse than ever and will fall to 0-8 on the season after this Sunday clash in London and 1-23 in the Hue Jackson era. Nick’s Pick is Vikings -9.5.
Game: Los Angeles Chargers vs. New England Patriots
Where: Foxboro, Massachusetts – Gillette Stadium
Kickoff: 1:00 pm ET
TV: CBS
Spread: Patriots -7
Nick’s Pick: Did you happen to watch the Patriots on Sunday evening? Tom Brady and his New England teammates have found their groove and that will be dangerous for any opposing team. Yes, Phillip Rivers and the Chargers have reeled off three-straight victories, but they will be no match for the Patriots in Foxboro at a start time that will feel like 10:00 am on the west coast. Nick’s Pick is Patriots -7.
Game: Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins
Where: Landover, Maryland – FedEx Field
Kickoff: 4:25 pm ET
TV: FOX
Spread: Cowboys -2.5
Nick’s Pick: The only thing that held us back a little bit here was the fact that the Redskins are on a short week having just played on Monday Night Football. That said, the ‘Skins play well at home and while Dallas was impressive last week in throttling the 49ers, the caliber of play will be ratcheted up on Sunday afternoon at FedEx Field. Nick’s Pick is Redskins +2.5.
Game: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Detroit Lions
Where: Detroit, Michigan – Ford Field
Kickoff: 8:30 pm ET
TV: NBC
Spread: Steelers -3
Nick’s Pick: A home dog on primetime TV? Sign us up. Nick’s Pick is Lions +3.
Game: Denver Broncos vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Where: Kansas City, Missouri – Arrowhead Stadium
Kickoff: 8:30 pm ET
TV: ESPN
Spread: Chiefs -7
Nick’s Pick: Denver in recent weeks has looked slow, unmotivated and just missing something we can’t explain. That said, if the Broncos can’t get up for a Monday night clash against a divisional rival, something may really be wrong. Yes, the Chiefs ultimately find a way to win this game, but it will be much closer than most people believe. Nick’s Pick is Broncos +7.
