CLEVELAND – We haven’t even flipped the calendar to October and it is already Week 4 of the college football season. Last week due to a hectic work schedule and the Cleveland Indians winning 22-straight games we were unable to post predictions against the spread (for entertainment purposes only) in both college and NFL football, however we return this week and remain excited picking games for the rest of the season.
Through three weeks of selections “Picks With Nick” has gone 6-8-1 (43%) in college football and 4-3 (57%) in the NFL ATS for a total record of 10-11-1 (48%) against the Las Vegas sportsbooks.
Our picks are made against Las Vegas oddsmakers merely helping create football interactions on Facebook and Twitter, as well as online and on-air content for Newsradio WTAM 1100 and WTAM.com.
Similar to last football season, our goal is to win 53% of our picks against the spread. Las Vegas sports books, give us 11/10 odds or -110, so in order to break even in picking games against the spread (ATS) we must win 52.4% of the games we select. Winning 58% of picks ATS would place you among the most elite sports handicappers in the world. We’ll shoot for somewhere between 53% - 58% again this season.
We are again keeping our college and NFL selections separate, but we will update the results weekly with full transparency seeing how we stack up against the Las Vegas oddsmakers. We are coming off a winning first season in which we hit 54% ATS in college football and NFL combined in 2016.
“Picks With Nick” will also feature a radio segment weekly on Newsradio WTAM 1100 discussing our selections.
Below is our full slate of college football featuring seven selections ATS for Week 4:
Game: Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Houston Cougars
Where: Houston, Texas – TDECU Stadium
Kickoff: 12:00 pm ET
TV: ABC/ESPN2
Spread: Houston -6.5
Nick’s Pick: The first team to hit 65 points may win this track meet Saturday afternoon in Houston. The Cougars are no stranger to beating teams from Power 5 conferences, last year beating Oklahoma and Louisville and this year topping Arizona. However, the Red Raiders feature one of the most prolific offenses in college football and coach Kliff Kingsbury made it a point to improve his team on the defensive side of the football. Nick’s Pick is Texas Tech +6.5.
Game: Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Texas A&M Aggies
Where: Arlington, Texas – AT&T Stadium
Kickoff: 12:00 pm ET
TV: ESPN
Spread: Texas A&M -2.5
Nick’s Pick: Always an entertaining match up between these two SEC rivals at a neutral site, Jerry World, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Texas A&M appears to have so many distractions surrounding their football team, especially the future of head coach Kevin Sumlin. The Razorbacks should be able to run the football and control the overall tempo of this football game. Nick’s Pick is Arkansas +2.5.
Game: Michigan Wolverines vs. Purdue Boilermakers
Where: West Lafayette, Indiana – Ross-Ade Stadium
Kickoff: 4:00 pm ET
TV: FOX
Spread: Michigan -10
Nick’s Pick: Purdue is quickly flipping the script with its football program and it won’t be long before Jeff Brohm has them back and competing for a Big Ten title. The Boilermakers have been impressive in starting the season 2-1. That said, Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines are an upper echelon team and Purdue will be playing up a weight class in this conference showdown. Michigan sends a message that there is still plenty of work to do before Purdue can hang with the “big boys” of the Big Ten. Nick’s Pick is Michigan -10.
Game: Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Iowa Hawkeyes
Where: Iowa City, Iowa – Kinnick Stadium
Kickoff: 7:30 pm ET
TV: FOX
Spread: Penn State -13
Nick’s Pick: Yes, Penn State is clearly the better overall team. And yes, they should probably win this game as indicated being a 13-point favorite on the road. That said, haven’t we learned that giving the Hawkeyes this many points at Kinnick Stadium is downright silly? Nick’s Pick is Iowa +13.
Game: Florida Gators vs. Kentucky Wildcats
Where: Lexington, Kentucky – Commonwealth Stadium
Kickoff: 7:30 pm ET
TV: SECN
Spread: Florida -1.5
Nick’s Pick: Mark Stoops has slowly turned the Kentucky football program around and now they finally get a statement game on campus against No. 20 Florida. Yes, the Gators are tough defensively and are probably the better overall team. However, the home underdog in this spot seems to provide some value. Nick’s Pick is Kentucky +1.5.
