March of Dimes Walk for Babies

CLEVELAND, OH - Cleveland's March of Dimes walk is Sunday and there's a need for funding in Cuyahoga County.

Dr. Julia Girzhel is an Obgyn at the Cleveland Clinic. She says the premature birth rates in Cuyahoga County are higher than other regions.

"Our population has some struggles, there are some socio-economic struggles," said Girzhel. "That has a direct effect on the ability to get excellent prenatal care and get screened for risk factors and address those rick factors.

All the money from fundraisers, like Sunday's walk at Wade Oval, goes into research and prevention in places that need it the most.

But Dr. Girzhel supports the walk for a personal reason; her son was born 11 weeks premature.

"It was a very scary seven weeks of being in the NICU and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," said Girzhel.

Her son is healthy now, but she doesn't want other parents to have to go through the same thing.
