Natural Gas Leak Involved In Medina Explosion

(Medina) – An explosion earlier this month which leveled an apartment building and resulted in the death of two people was fueled by a natural gas leak in the building.  That according to the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Fire Marshal spokesperson Kelly Stincer tells WTAM 1100 their investigator found that there had been a small gas leak in the building that was destroyed, and other gas leaks had been found in other buidlings at the Medina Village Apartments.

Earlier, Columbia Gas of Ohio had determined that their service lines to the building had no leaks, and that’s been confirmed by the Fire Marshal inspector.

Yet to be determined is how the gas was ignited.

The explosion on Feb. 9 killed 18-year-old Jacob Drake.  His mother, Sheila, died later from her injuries.
