LORAIN, OH – The man who ran out of a Lorain courtroom during deliberations on his case is now in police custody.
Late last night, members of the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Devante Gibbs, 24.
On February 10, Gibbs was on trial for rape, kidnapping, felonious assault, and child endangerment, the victim was a 2 year old child. During jury deliberations Gibbs left the courthouse and hadn’t been seen, until now. Gibbs was subsequently found guilty on all counts.
Late Friday night, information was sent to the U.S. Marshals Service in Los Angeles and within 24 hours Gibbs was arrested. Gibbs again attempted to flee out the back door of the home but was quickly apprehended. He will now await extradition back to Ohio and possibly face more charges for his actions.
“The reach of this task force is great and officers do not rest until fugitives like Devante Gibbs are in custody," said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott. "Knowing that Gibbs will be spending a considerable amount of time in custody will hopefully bring the victim’s family some peace.”
