Putting LED lights on the bottoms of surfboards might deter attacks from great white sharks. A new Australian study put LED lights on seal-shaped decoys and found it disrupted sharks from seeing the silhouettes up above, reducing attack rates. The sharks appear to rely on visual cues of a dark object against a lighter background when attacking a target. The testing was done off South Africa, where there is a huge concentration of the predators. The study was published in the journal Current Biology.
