Total Solar Eclipse

On April 8th, millions of Americans will get a chance to see a rare total solar eclipse – but they better not do it with their naked eyes, NASA warns.

Staring directly at the sun during a solar eclipse is only safe when it’s completely covered by the moon, says NASA spokesman Bill Nelson. Otherwise, it’s the same as staring at the sun at any time, meaning it can cause permanent eye damage, he says. “Please, please put those glasses on,” Nelson says.

But not just any glasses, Nelson warns. Because counterfeit and poor quality solar eclipse glasses have saturated the market, he advises purchasing only glasses from a company that’s approved by the American Astronomical Society.
