ABC News Political Analyst Steve Roberts spoke to Bill about Tuesday’s election was a devastating defeat for the Democratic ticket, and many analysts are reading the results as foreshadowing a basic re-alignment of American politics. But in Steve’s view, the evidence does not support that conclusion. Harris was doomed by a series of basic facts. Biden was a historically unpopular president who nonetheless insisted on running again. By the time he pulled out the party had no time to vet and produce a seasoned replacement. They had to choose Harris who could not separate herself from the administration, and thus was inevitably and fatally burdened with the economic and psychological hangover from the Covid pandemic – a hangover that has defeated ruling parties around the world. Plus, she was running against a brutal historical fact – only one sitting vice-president has been elected president in the last 188 years. Democrats have a lot of work to do with groups that drifted toward Trump: Latino and Black men, younger voters, workers without college degrees who think Democrats are elitist snobs. But the situation for the party going forward is not quite as dire as it looks at first glance: just look at the Senate races in the swing states.
