Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested this weekend at an airport outside Paris. French authorities said the arrest of Durov, who is occasionally known as “Russia’s Mark Zuckerberg,” is part of a wide-ranging investigation into the platform’s complicity in the distribution of child pornography, drug sales, and money laundering, among other things. Telegram is a very popular messaging platform, boasting nearly a billion users according to the company, many in Europe and Asia. It purports to offer encrypted (very secure) communications, and in recent years has come under scrutiny for hosting unsavory, dangerous, or potentially illegal content. Telegram says that the app “abides by EU laws,” and that it is “absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform.” On a lighter note, Apple has announced when we’ll get a look at the next iPhone, and it’s not that far away.
