(Cleveland) - Ohio voters on Tuesday rejected Issue One, which if approved, would have made it harder to change the Ohio Constitution. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state legislators put the issue on the ballot in a special election, hoping it would pass, forcing an issue going on the November ballot to put abortion rights in the state constitution to get 60% of the vote to be approved. Now, that issue can win with only a simple majority vote.
Urban counties, including Cuyahoga, were solidly against Issue One, suburban counties were mostly against it, while rural counties were overwhelmingly for Issue One.
If Issue One had passed, it would be harder for voters to change the Ohio Constitution. Petition signatures would have to come from all 88 Ohio counties, instead of the current 44. If petitions were turned in with not enough valid signatures, there would be no ten-day "cure period" to obtain more, as is the case with proposed changes in Ohio law. Finally, the public vote would have to approve an amendment by 60% of the vote, rather than the current simple majority.
