A bear that killed a man in an “unprovoked predatory attack” in Arizona last week has tested negative for rabies and appears to have been healthy, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
Although the black bear was unusually aggressive and appeared to have no reason for the June 16th attack on Steven Johnson, the results of a necropsy indicate the 7-to-10-year-old animal was “in good condition with no apparent signs of disease,” according to AGFD officials. What’s more is the bear did not appear to be hungry, the agency reports.
Unable to determine the reason for the bizarre incident, the AGFD has released a statement that reads, “This bear acted in what appeared to be an unprovoked predatory attack by the animal. Bears are predators, and when acting aggressively toward humans can attack, injure and kill."
