(Cleveland) - Interim Cuyahoga County Sheriff Steven Hammett submitted his resignation Monday. “I want to personally thank Sheriff Hammett for his dedication and service to Cuyahoga County and its residents,” said County Executive Chris Ronayne. “An interim will be named in the coming weeks while a comprehensive search is conducted to permanently fill the position.”
Sheriff Hammett was named Interim Sheriff on May 23, 2022. He has been with the County Sheriff’s Department since September 2021, previously serving as a Deputy Sheriff Captain. Prior to his work at the County, he served as the Chief of Public Safety for the Cleveland Institute of Art, Chief of Police for University Heights, and Deputy Chief of Police for the City of Shaker Heights.
“It truly has been an honor to serve in this role,” said Sheriff Hammett. “We have made significant progress these last several months, and I firmly believe that will continue under this new administration. Cuyahoga County is heading in the right direction under Executive Ronayne.”
Sheriff Hammett’s last day will be Friday, February 17. Executive Ronayne will appoint someone before then to serve as Interim Sheriff while the County completes a robust search to permanently fill the role. The permanent replacement will be recommended by the Executive and must be approved by County Council.
