Three Kentucky residents are recovering from injuries after a sign crashed down on their car.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of a Denny's in Elizabethtown, authorities say. Two women and one man were inside the vehicle when a gust of wind ripped the Denny's sign from its post, causing it to plummet in a collision course with the vehicle, says Chris Denham, a spokesman with the Elizabethtown Police Department. "I’ve never seen anything like this," Denham says. "It’s certainly very windy out here and I’m certain that did have a factor and was involved in this."

The vehicle suffered so much damage that rescuers had trouble getting to the victims, Denham says. One of the women was critically injured in the freak accident, while the other two occupants are being treated for less-serious injuries, he says. An investigation is underway, authorities say.
