Today in 1989, Joel Steinberg was sentenced to 8 1/3-to-25 years in jail for killing his illegally adopted daughter, Lisa. His lover, Hedda Nussbaum, testified against him and was never prosecuted. In January 2004, Steinberg was denied parole for the fifth time, though he has since been released – and is unrepentant.

Today in 1998, two students, ages 13 and 11, dressed in camouflage opened fire on dozens of schoolmates at Westside Middle School, in a quiet rural area just west of Jonesboro, Arkansas. In the end, four girls and one teacher were killed in what police said was a carefully planned ambush. Nine other girls and one other teacher were also wounded. The shooters were pronounced delinquent in juvenile court the following August and are both now free.
