Sydney's First Fatal Shark Attack In Almost 60 Years - 15 FT Great White

In Sydney's first fatal shark incident in nearly 60 years, a swimmer died Wednesday in a "catastrophic" attack by a great white, authorities say.

The incident occurred near Little Bay Beach when a 15-foot shark surfaced and attacked the swimmer "vertically," one witness says. "We heard a yell and then turned around," Kris Linto says. "It looked like a car just landed in the water. Big splash."

The unidentified man suffered "catastrophic injuries as a result of the attack, and there was nothing paramedics could do when we arrived on scene," says New South Wales state Ambulance Inspector Lucky Phrachnanh. The fatal attack marked the first to occur in the Sydney area since 1963.
