Lightning Bolt Stretching 477 Miles Over 3 U.S. States Sets World Record

A 'megaflash' lightning bolt has set a new record for the longest ever - stretching nearly 500 miles across three states.

The bolt - recorded in April 2020 - has been named the new record holder by the World Meteorological Organization.

It flashed a total of 477.2 miles, across parts of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi - breaking the previous record of 440 miles set in Brazil in 2018.

Most lightning bolts don't go farther than 10 miles, and last less than one second.
