Stockton Firefighter Fatally Shot While Battling Blaze; Suspect Detained

A California firefighter on Monday was shot and killed while attempting to extinguish a dumpster fire, authorities say.

Stockton Fire Department Captain Max Fortuna, 47, was among a group that responded to the blaze at about 4:45 a.m., police say. As they were putting out the fire, shots rang out -- and Fortuna was struck, says Fire Chief Rick Edwards. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. "This is a very, very sad day for this fire department," Edwards says.

A 67-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the shooting, according to Assistant Police Chief Jim Chraska. His motive for shooting Fortuna is unclear.
