Westlake, Ohio Police Blotter January 7th - January 14th

WESTLAKE, OH - On 1/7/22 at approx. 6PM a concerned citizen called to report that a vehicle on Bradley Rd was swerving all over the road and had crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic. Officers located the vehicle in the parking lot of the Promenade. The operator appeared to be intoxicated but denied drinking. He was field tested and arrested for OVI. The 54yo Bay Village resident’s license was suspended after he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with OVI and later released to a sober person.

On 1/8/22 at approx. 4:45PM a citizen reported that they had a MacBook Pro stolen from her unlocked vehicle while it was parked in front of Market District at the Promenade. A theft report was taken.

On 1/9/22 at about 1:20AM officers responded to a residence on Columbia after the resident heard screaming outside then heard a window break on the front of their home. They had spotted a male in a white hoodie outside the front door. Officers arrived to find the damage but no one around. When they were investigating what happened, WPD received a 911 call from a resident on Arthur Ave .A female requested the police respond because her intoxicated adult son and sober husband were arguing. A knife was reportedly involved. The 21yo son was described as wearing a white hoodie and had left the house. Officers located him outside where he complied with the officers’ orders and was taken into custody without further incident. Investigation revealed that the fight with the family was verbal but the 21yo had threatened himself with the knife. He also admitted to mistaking the Columbia Rd house for his own and breaking the window to gain entry. He was transported to the hospital for treatment and was charged with criminal damaging.

On 1/10/22 at about 3:30PM a Sergeant on patrol noticed persons taking a license plate off a vehicle in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn on Clemens. The males then entered a room at the hotel. Officers responded to the room to talk to the occupants. Several people in the room were interviewed. One admitted to “finding” the license plate on the ground in Norwalk, OH before placing it on the vehicle. Officers conferred with Norwalk PD and learned that the plate had not been reported as stolen. It was confiscated and placed into property. A 40yo Lorain male was found to have a felony warrant for Aggravated Robbery out of Lorain County Sheriff. Another male, a 36yo Oberlin resident, was found to be wanted for traffic offenses.

On 1/11/22 at approx. 7AM WPD received several 911 calls reporting that a vehicle went off the roadway into the tree line of I90 W/B before Crocker Rd. Officers arrived and confirmed no one was injured before investigating what happened. The car that ended up in the trees had changed lanes just before striking a semi-truck from behind. The operator then lost control and left the roadway to the north. Alcohol was not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

On 1/14/22 at about 9AM WPD received a radio report from Avon PD that an occupant of a vehicle on I90 E/B was “waving a gun around. WPD officers located the described vehicle and stopped it on I90.Investigation revealed that the 24yo Cleveland male did have a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the vehicle. He said he had moved the gun from his waistband to the passenger seat while driving. He did not have a concealed carry permit. The handgun was taken as evidence and the man was sent on his way. The case will be presented to the county Grand Jury for charges of improper handling and carrying a concealed weapon.
