Lake County Sheriff's Office Gets Grant for Inmate Expenses of Pandemic

(Cleveland, OH) - Partial housing and medical expenses incurred by the Lake County Sheriff's Office by housing inmates during the peak of the pandemic will partially be paid for by a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for $146,557.

Last March, the federal Office of Management and Budget issued a memorandum giving awarding agencies in the federal government, including the DOJ, expanded authority to grant aid to qualifying recipients.

Addressing the commissioners, Lake County Sheriff Chief Deputy Jeff Sherwood noted the additional costs were brought about during the health crisis when the jail continued to keep inmates who would have otherwise been sent to prison.

Commissioner John Plecnik and Commissioner John Hamercheck both express that this is a good way to bring dollars back to Lake County to lower the ultimate tax burden on residents.
