Parma Standoff Ends With Man Shot Dead

(Parma) - A standoff at a house in Parma has ended after about 12 hours, ending with the death of the man holed up in that house.

Parma Police say that about 2:00 p.m. Sunday, police were going after a Dodge pickup truck that was just involved in an off-duty police officer, in uniform, being shot at in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at State and Brookpark Roads. The pickup driver, said to be 64-year-old Kevin Giesel, drove southbound on State at a high speed, heading to his house in the 5700 block of South Park Boulevard.

Giesel ran inside the house, and refused to come out. Police tried to make contact with Giesel, but he barricaded himself inside. Crisis negotiators were brought in. and they did manage to speak to Giesel, on and off, for about six hours. That's when Giesel stopped talking with police.

About 2:30 Monday morning, Giesel pointed a gun at police from inside the house, and fired the gun. A number of police officers fired back. When police went inside, they found Giesel dead.

Parma Police say it became evident to them during the standoff that Giesel was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

the incident is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
