(Youngstown) - The U.S. Marshal's Service is reported to be scrambling to find a place to lock up about 800 inmates awaiting federal trials in Northeast Ohio. That's because the Biden administration has let the current contracts with private prisons expire, including the privately-run Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown.
The feds have been given three months to find alternatives for locking up people as they await trial. in the past, county jails were used, but those contracts were allowed to expire due to a variety of problems, including civil rights issues at some jails.
U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Cleveland) is asking the Justice Department to start looking for adequate places in Ohio to house federal inmates before trial. Most people want the inmates to still be housed in Ohio, in part due to transportation costs and issues, and in part due to lawyers and famlies not being able to visit and talk with the inmates.
