Cleveland Police Officer Shot Dead; Suspects Arrested

(Cleveland) - A veteran Cleveland Police detective has been shot dead in the line of duty, and another man was also shot dead in the same incident.

Det. James Skernivitz, who was 53, died in the shooting at West 65th and Storer, in the Stockyards neighborhood on the city's west side. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner also said that Scott Dingess, 50, was also shot dead.

Reports say that Det. Skernivitz was part of the police department's Violent Crime Task Force, which was part of Operation Legend, a federal-local partnership to deal with violent crimes in selected major cities.

WTAM has been told by sources that two suspects in the shooting of Det. Skernivitz have been arrested, and a third is being sought. The FBI set up a hotline for information: 216-622-6842.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine have asked for flags to be lowered to half-staff in memory of Det. Skernivitz.
