Westlake Police Blotter: Father Found Dead While Watching Daughter

On 7/27/19 at about 1am WPD received a call from an observant citizen who witnessed a dark colored Chevy Malibu strike another vehicle in the parking lot of apartments on Weymouth Cir.The Chevy drove away from the collision but returned a short time later and went to another part of the lot.Officers located the driver walking toward the apartment building.The 33yo male from Warren, OH admitted to “scratching” another vehicle a few minutes prior.Officers noted that he was slurring his speech and smelled of an alcoholic beverage.The male was field tested and arrested for OVI and failure to control his vehicle.His breath test showed he was well over the legal limit.

On 7/29/19 WPD took a report of a theft of a catalytic converter from a bus in the parking lot of a business on Detroit Rd.The surveillance video in the area is being reviewed.

On Wednesday 7/31/19 at approx. 12:15PM WPD responded to a report of a 42yo male without a pulse at an apartment at Village in the Park Apartments. He had not shown up for work and his ex-girlfriend and a co-worker had gone to check on him and found him unresponsive. Westlake Fire and WPD officers responded and found that the male was in fact deceased. The Cuyahoga County Coroner was called and responded to the scene. Evidence was collected and the death appears to be drug related but any official causes will be determined by the coroner. Unfortunately the male was watching his 2yo daughter when he passed away. The child was alone with her father for a number of hours before being discovered. She was unharmed and is in the care of her mother at this time. County Mobile Crisis was alerted in an attempt to provide the family available resources.

On 7/31/19 at approx. 1:30PM an officer stopped a vehicle at Crocker and Detroit Rds for a traffic violation.The operator, a 33yo Westlake resident, had over 55 driving under suspension entries on his driving record and of course was currently suspended.There were also drug use indicators observed during the stop.During a search of the vehicle, a loaded handgun and narcotics were located.The male was arrested and later charged with felony Having Weapons Under Disability due to his prior drug possession and trafficking convictions.

On 8/1/19 at about 1:30P officers responded to a parking lot on the corner of Bradley and Center Ridge Rds for a theft report.In all, 4 vehicles had their tires and rims stolen.The total loss was over $10,000.There are no suspects at this time.

On 8/1/19 at approx. 8:24P an officer stopped a vehicle on I90 at Canterbury for traffic violations.The operator was slow to stop as he threw bags of what appeared to be narcotics from the window.The car did stop but as officers were trying to order the male from the vehicle he fled the scene in the car.Officers pursued.The operator finally made a good choice approx. 90 seconds later as he stopped on his own and threw his keys from the window.The 40yo from Elyria was taken into custody without further incident.Mason jars of suspected marijuana and methamphetamine were recovered from the roadway and in the vehicle.The male was charged with felony tampering with evidence while drug possession and traffic charges will be presented to the county grand jury.
