Coast Guard, Avon Lake Fire Department Rescue Four Off Capsized Boat

Avon Lake - A close call in the waters of Lake Erie Tuesday afternoon.

Avon Lake Fire chief Jeremy Betsa says his department got a call around 1:17 pm Tuesday for a search and rescue mission involving boaters in Lake Erie.

"We went to the Miller Road boat launch and couldn't locate them, but a man on board called 9-1-1 and that made the difference," said Betsa.

Overall, three adults and one child would be pulled from the water after the man's cell phone was pinged by law enforcement.

"It was helpful to have a general area to search with the waves and wind, it could have broaden the search to the entire coast off Avon Lake," says Betsa. "It certainly narrowed it down to one little area."

The U.S. Coast Guard stepped in, and were able to fine the boaters and bring them to shore. All four were wearing life jackets in the water, and no injuries were reported.
