Person Who Drove Car Into Cuyahoga River Identified

Cleveland - We now know the name of the man who drove his car into the Cuyahoga River early Monday morning near the West Bank of The Flats downtown.

Cleveland Police say 43-year-old Ryan Kilpatrick, of Cuyahoga Falls, drove his 2018 Jeep Compass the wrong way on Elm Street, broke through the fence and crashed into the river.

Kilpatrick told officers when he returned to the scene 14 hours later that he thought the road would take him across the river. Kilpatrick then says after he went in, he exited the car, swam to shore and left the scene.

Members of the Cleveland Division of Fire and ODNR responded for the vehicle in the water and the vehicle was located via sonar and pulled out. Kilpatrick will have a private tow service pull the vehicle from the water via his personal insurance. He was cited for Reckless Operation, Failure to Control and One Way.
