Man Who Hit, Killed Mentor Officer Changes Plea

Painesville - The man who fatally hit and killed Mentor Police officer Matthew Mazany, then fled the scene, has changed his plea.

25-year-old Brian Anthony admitted his guilt in Lake County Common Pleas Court Friday morning, pleading guilty to four seperate charges from the incident, including aggravated vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.

Anthony reportedly went out to drink at a friend's house, then bought drugs and attempted to drive back through Mentor on Route 2 June 24th of 2018 when he struck Mazany, who was assisting another officer during a traffic stop.

Reports then say Anthony went to a friend's house in Mentor and told people there he thought he hit something, but wasn't sure what it was.

He will be sentenced April 12th back at Lake County Common Pleas Court, and faces up to 11 and a half years behind bars. Anthony could also be fined up to nearly $22,000.
