Thomas Piispanen Arrested After SWAT Standoff in Akron

Akron, Ohio – Shortly before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) Akron and Canton Divisions, along with the members of Summit County SWAT, arrested Thomas Piispanen, 31.

Piispanen was originally wanted by the New Franklin Police Department for burglary and aggravated menacing after an incident at his ex-girlfriend’s home yesterday afternoon.Members of the NOVFTF worked with New Franklin Police Department to try and locate Piispanen as quickly as possible.

Early this morning task force officers located Piispanen in the 1200 block of East Turkeyfoot Lake Rd. in Akron.Since Piispanen had made threats to law enforcement and refused to exit the residence the Summit County SWAT Team was called to assist with the arrest.After many hours of law enforcement officers surrounding the home the SWAT Team made entry and arrested Piispanen. Five firearms were also seized out of the home.

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott stated, “This fugitive not only posed a serious threat to the community but also to any law enforcement officer he came into contact with.Due to the quick response of members of the task force and members of the SWAT team the community and law enforcement officers are safer tonight with Piispanen off the streets.”
