Highland Heights Mayor Resigns

(Cleveland) - The longtime mayor of Highland Heights has resigned his position, under a cloud of scandal unrelated to the municipality.

Scott Coleman became mayor of Highland Heights back in 2004. Tuesday afternoon, he resigned the position, with Highland Heights City Council President Chuck Brunello, Jr., taking the oath of office and becoming mayor within a few hours of the Coleman's resignation.

Coleman acted as the treasurer of Mike Joyce's congressional campaign between 2015-2018. During that time, Representative Joyce's campaign claims Coleman embezzled more than 80 thousand dollars from campaign bank accounts. Joyce's office has asked the Federal Election Commission to investigate the matter. Though Coleman has resigned from the Highland Heights position, he has not been the subject of any criminal indictment. The Guega County prosecutor's office says they have an open investigation related to the matter.
