President Donald Trump said that there is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at the U.S.-Mexican border and in his first Oval Office address as president, he called the situation a "crisis of the heart." Trump said that tens of thousands of people are flowing across the border and that women and children are the biggest victims of illegal immigration.
Trump pointed out that a vast majority of illegal drugs are entering the United States from Mexico, which fuels the opioid epidemic that is plaguing the country. He also cited numerous examples of illegal immigrants who have committed vicious crimes.
Trump said that he submitted a plan to Congress to solve the crisis, and called on them pass the bill which includes over $5 billion to start construction on the border wall.
“This barrier is absolutely critical to border security,” Trump said in his first address from the Oval Office. “This is just common sense.”
He accused Democrats of refusing to acknowledge a growing border crisis and blamed them for the ongoing, partial shutdown of the federal government because they refuse to fund border security.
"This is a choice between right and wrong, between justice and injustice," he added.
