Police investigate accidental shooting at Akron U.

Akron -  A 19 year-old man is hospitalized with a gun shot wound to the abdomen and a 17-year-old in custody for an accidental shooting in an Akron University residence hall.

University leaders issued a statement Saturday that neither was a student.

The accidental shooting took place around midnight in the Exchange Street residence hall, after victim Tommy Micah Lavette of Bedford, and the 17-year-old suspect, were let into the hall by a resident.

During a visit with an acquaintance in the hall,the gun went off, wounding Lavette.

Lavette is being treated at Akron General Hospital Cleveland Clinic Hospital.

The 17-year-old suspect is being held at the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

A news release issued by the university Saturday acknowledged the concern that students and other members of the Akron University community have about such incidents, and said that representatives from the university's Student and Resident Life departments are on campus to offer support.

Akron police and university police are investigating the incident.
