(Cleveland) - Area businessman and corporate leader Matthew Figgie has passed away at the age of 52 of an apparent heart attack.
Matthew grew up in Lakewood with his parents Harry and Nancy Figgie, who raised three children, and constructed a major business enterprise, Figgie International. Created in 1963, Harry Figgie made the company the 367th largest corporation in the United States, primarily through acquisitions.
The Figgie's companies created thousands of jobs, and sustained many charitable and philanthropic interests.
At the time of his death, Matthew Figgie was chairman of Clark-Reliance Corporation of Strongsville, and the The Figgie Foundation. Last year, Matthew became chairman of the Fairmount Center for the Arts.
The Gilmour Academy graduate was well known for supporting for several local charities including contributing heavily to "Coats For Kids" and University Hospitals Hospice.
Ohio Governor John Kasich remembered Matthew Figgie as "...a great and generous man."
