(Medina) - There were a few tense moments in downtown Medina today. Police blocked off the area around South Court Street and West Smith Road near the square around 12:30pm.
Police Chief Ed Kinney says the section of downtown had to be evacuated due to large gas line that was damaged, as road crews were working in the area.
Kinney tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, the escaping gas did not ignite, and fire crews evacuated about 30 buildings, sending the occupants to the town square for safety. Traffic was restricted in a two block area. He says no one was hurt.
Bill Loomer of Columbia gas reports their crews quickly responded to shut off the gas supply at a distant valve, and to repair the damage. The line was capped by 3:30pm.
The Medina County Administration Building was among those closed. That may force the treasurer to extend today's tax due date.
