EATON TOWNSHIP - The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating an early morning crash that left one Midview High School student dead and another hospitalized.
A news release from the patrol's Elyria post says 17-year-old Lindsey Mae Rotuno, of Grafton, died shortly after being taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Chase Johnson remains hospitalized with "incapacitating" injuries.
According to the highway patrol, shortly after leaving Midview High's prom, around 3 a.m. Sunday morning, the two were travelling westbound on State Route 82 when Johnson drove onto the grassy median at the intersection with State Route 57, running into two utility poles.
While the 18-year-old Johnson was wearing his seatbelt, Rotuno, reportedly, was not.
The patrol said neither speed or alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, however, the driver is suspected of being under the influence of drugs at the time. A Go Fund Me account has been set up for the family.
Midview Schools released the following statement Sunday:
"After prom on Saturday a tragedy struck the Midview community. One of our Midview High School students sadly passed away in a car accident while another is still hospitalized. The Midview administration and board of education extends our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this student and are praying for a full recovery for the other.
The district will have counselors available at both the middle school and high school on Monday and throughout the week for students and staff if they need someone to talk to. Parents, please check with your children during this difficult time. If you think your child is struggling or needs additional help, please contact a school counselor immediately. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers."
