Wanted grandmother surrenders to police

(Cleveland) - Norma Caraballo-Vazquez, who was wanted by Cleveland Police,  turned herself in last evening at the Warrant Suspect Unit and was taken into custody without incident.

She was wanted in the death of her 2 year old grandson, and has been charged with Child Endangering, Felony 2.  The charge could be upgraded if the medical examiner decides the case is a homicide.

This case remains in the early stages, and the investigation with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner and the Cleveland Division of Police is ongoing.

Investigators report the toddler tested positive for methadone, and was taken to the hospital on Tuesday after being found unresponsive in his crib at his home on West 20th street.

Police say the youngster died shortly thereafter and had methadone in his system at the time.

Detectives say Caraballo-Vazquez is a recovering heroin addict and takes methadone daily.

She is expected to be arraigned in Cleveland Municipal Court on Saturday.
