(Cleveland)- If you have expired or unused prescription drugs to get rid of you no longer have to wait for the biannual Operation Medicine Cabinet program.

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald announced Monday morning the launch of the Cuyahoga County Prescription Drug Drop Box program, the newest step in the fight against prescription drug abuse.

There are 36 boxes up around the county to drop off unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs. The drugs will be picked up monthly or as needed by the Sheriff's Office.

"In 2012, 1,500 people ended up dying from accidental prescription drug overdoses and that is a 400-percent increase in the last ten years," says FitzGerald.

Common Pleas Drug Court
Judge David Matia, Sheriff Frank Bova and Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson were also in attendance at the news conference.
