Roger Aguilera-Mederos appeared in court on Monday for an initial hearing to have his sentence reconsidered. He was convicted on 27 counts for a crash on I-70 in Colorado that killed four people in 2019. On December 13th, Aguilera-Mederos was sentenced to 110 years in prison, as required by Colorado’s mandatory minimum, despite Judge A. Bruce Jones’s disagreement with that law.
At yesterday’s hearing District Attorney Alexis King suggested that her team would recommend a sentence of 20-30 years instead, based on communication with the victims’ families. In her motion, she refers to the same law allowing a court to reconsider the sentence depending on the circumstances.
Judge A. Bruce Jones scheduled Aguilera-Mederos’s next hearing for January 13th. An online petition was created after Aguilera-Mederos received his sentence of 110 years. Nearly five million people have signed it for the judge to offer commutation as time served, or grant clemency to Aguilera-Mederos.
