With over 800,000 deaths in the United States due to COVID-19, more families have dedicated thousands of dollars to cover the costs of funerals. However, many of those families may have not known that assistance could be available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Recently, Wanda Olsen of Villa Rica, Georgia shared her story about her son’s death in March due to COVID-19, and that FEMA provided her family $1,974 to help cover the funeral cost. FEMA has been available to help cover funeral costs to families of people that have died of COVID-19. FEMA is under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
According to FEMA’s website, those who apply must submit an official death certificate, and what needs to be included depending on when the death occurred. Its website provides an FAQ with additional details, including who can apply, and types of expenses covered.
