The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Pfizer’s oral pill, Paxlovid, to treat COVID-19 – the first known authorized home treatment for the virus.

As part of its statement, the FDA will allow the pill for individuals at least twelve years of age, weighing at least 88 pounds, and that have received a doctor’s prescription. It also recommends starting to take pills within five days of symptom onset.

According to Pfizer, Paxlovid could reduce the chances of hospitalization by 89 percent for those who test positive for COVID-19.

The FDA previously approved Remdesvir to treat the virus, but it must be given intravenously, not orally. Merck is also expected to receive approval for its COVID pill, soon.
