USA Gymnastics, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee and insurers have reached a $380 million settlement with at least 500 women that reported abuse from Larry Nassar.
Details include a requirement for a survivor to be added to the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors, and for another survivor to be added to a committee for safe sports and athlete wellness. This settlement will also help establish a “restorative justice program” so that survivors can give more input for handling accusations.
The process began five years ago after Rachael Denhollander became the first to accuse Nassar of sexual assault. She has released a statement on Twitter reacting to the most recent settlement.
Nassar is the former team doctor for the United States Women’s national gymnastics team. He pleaded guilty to several counts of sexual conduct in 2018, and was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison. He also worked at Michigan State University, which agreed to a $500 million settlement in the same year.
Together, these settlements have amounted to $880 million.
