MLB Contemplating Major Playoff Format Change

Major League Baseball is contemplating a major change to its playoff format. Multiple outlets report MLB is considering expanding the playoff field from 10 teams to 14, with teams selecting their opponents in an expanded wild card round. The format would include three division winners and four wild card teams, with the best team in each league receiving a bye into the division series. The remaining six teams would play three-game series in the opening round. The two division winners would pick their wild card opponent with all of the selections revealed on television the night the regular-season ends. A change can't happen until 2022 at the earliest as MLB's current TV deals with ESPN and Turner both expire after the 2021 season.
