When Evelyn Marcum was born last October, she was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening disease that causes her liver’s bile ducts to become blocked and scarred. Her mother, Nicole Marcum, described the situation as “very scary and very overwhelming.” Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where Evelyn spent most of the last year, recommended a liver transplant.
Good news arrived this past weekend when Nicole announced on social media that a suitable donor had been found and Evelyn had undergone successful transplant surgery. The operation went smoothly and the medical team says they’re satisfied with her condition.
The lifesaving donation came from another infant, a generous gift that’s giving Evelyn a new chance at life. The Marcums are grateful for the extraordinary gift and are offering their deepest condolences to the donor's family. In addition to the successful surgery, the family also received the great news that Louisville-based nonprofit Kosair for Kids is stepping up to help the family with Evelyn’s outstanding health expenses, medical equipment, and future care.
