New Pandemic High For Number Of Office Workers

People are heading back to the office at the highest rate since the pandemic began. According to data from a security company that monitors access-card swipes, 36% of the workforce was back in the office the first week of October. It's a five-percent increase from the week of Labor Day.

There are also some regional differences in returning to the workplace, as Texas cities like Austin, Dallas, and Houston have seen office return numbers close to 50 percent in September. On the flip side, a record 4.3-million people quit their jobs in August.

That’s up 242-thousand from July and experts say it’s evidence of the considerable leverage workers have in today's economy. Why are so many workers quitting? They’re demanding higher pay, better working conditions and more flexibility. The sectors most affected? Accommodation and food services, wholesale trade and state and local government education.
