What’s the hottest vehicle in America today? Well, if you’re a thief, it’s a Ford Full-Sized Pickup Truck. That’s one of the findings in the just released National Insurance Crime Bureau’s “Hot Wheels” report for 2020.According to their numbers, the top ten most stolen vehicles in the USA break down like this:
Ford Full-Sized Pickup Truck –44,014 stolen (13.0% more than 2019)
Chevy Full-Sized Pickup Truck –40,968 (25.7% increase)
Honda Civic –34,144 (2.8% increase)
Honda Accord –30,814 (0.2% increase)
Toyota Camry –16,915 (8.0% increase)
Nissan Altima –14,668 (9.8% increase)
GMC Full-Sized Pickup Truck –13,016 (16.6% increase)
Toyota Corolla –12,515 (3.1% increase)
Honda CR-V –12,309 (21.9% increase)
Dodge Full-Sized Pickup Truck –11,991 (6.2% increase)
It’s interesting to note that six of the top ten are Japanese model vehicles, while the rest are pickup trucks…and the Chevy trucks and Honda CR-V have shown theft increases of over 20% each.
To avoid your car getting hijacked, the NICB recommends common sense steps like not leaving your keys in your car, leaving your windows up, and parking in well-lit areas. Beyond that, audible alarms, devices like “The Club,” VIN etching, and wheel/brake locks are a good thing to have. If you want to go the extra mile, though, you might want to look into smart keys, fuse cut-offs, kill switches, and/or wireless ignition authentication.
