The Cleveland Indians have selected the new name for the franchise, according to multiple reports. It's unclear what name was selected and when the club will formally announce it.
Indians owner Paul Dolan announced plans to change the organization's name in December of last year with hopes a new name would be settled on by the 2022 season. The team has been called the 'Indians' for more than 100-years..
In recent months, the team had been pouring over a list of nearly 1,200 potential names before ultimately deciding on a new one.
Opponents of the name, and others that are attached to other professional and collegiate teams, have grown louder in recent years forcing the likes of the NFL's Washington franchise to drop the name Redskins in favor of the Washington Football Team.
In 2018, the Indians dropped the use of the popular Chief Wahoo logo which some folks considered offensive.
The team has been called the Cleveland Indians since 1915.
