California might be doing away with boys and girls sections of big stores. A new bill has been proposed – Assembly Bill 1084 – that would ban boys and girls sections to enforce gender-neutral displays of toys, clothes and other childcare items.
Under the bill, retailers with 500 or more employees would have to “maintain undivided areas of its sales floor,” regardless of whether the toys or clothes are usually marketed for either gender. At the very least, the bill would ban “boys” and “girls”-labeled sections, with a potential $1,000 penalty.
If passed, the bill would go into effect on January 1st, 2024. It’s already taking heat online, critics saying it’s “wasting time on trivial legislation” during the pandemic.
