Elderly Couple Defends Their Home After Man Breaks In

In Aiken County, South Carolina, a home invader picked the wrong house. Eighty-two-year-old Herbert Parrish and his 79-year-old wife Lois said they heard a knock at their back door around two in the afternoon.

At the door was 61-year-old Harold Runnels who initially said he was looking for his lost dog but then forced his way inside, pulled out a large knife, and began attacking Mrs. Parrish.

Herbert, a Vietnam War vet, quickly, grabbed a shotgun hanging on the wall by the door. But rather than shoot, Herbert began repeatedly hitting the intruder with the gun barrel until Runnels was unconscious.

Herbert said, "I started hitting him in the head with the barrel and I know I must have hit him at least ten times right in the face, just as hard as I could hit him."

He wasn't kidding. Runnels later died at the hospital from the injuries. Both Herbert and Lois were injured in the intrusion but are both expected to fully recover. No charges are expected.
