A much touted coronavirus test may give a false negative up to half the time.
Researchers at New York University found that Abbott Laboratories’ 15 minute rapid test, run by a machine called ID NOW, didn’t catch nearly as many infections as a 45 minute test did. Both short tests are in heavy use after FDA authorization.
Abbott’s test missed one-third of infections when the swabs were stored in chemicals and almost half when stored dry.
The NYU research seems to be in line with a Cleveland Clinic study. Neither has been peer reviewed. The FDA is looking at the studies.
