Making Relationships Work During Coronavirus Isolation

Dealing with the coronavirus outbreak isn’t exactly romantic, but it doesn’t have to be the end of your relationship. Whether you’re self-isolating alone and missing your partner or you’re cooped up as a couple jumping each time they cough, you can get through this trying time and these tips can help.

If you’re self-isolating apart:

Make video chats a routine -It’s nice to hear your partner’s voice and see their face when you’re stuck at home alone, especially if the only person you’ve talked to is the Grubhub driver bringing you food. FaceTiming a couple times a day can help you feel connected and give you something to look forward to.

Don’t forget about your sex life- Just because you’re totally alone and you can’t touch each other doesn’t mean you should neglect your sex life, you just have to get creative like sending sexy photos or trying virtual sex.

Try not to freak out- It may feel like this self-isolation will never end, but try to remember it won’t last forever and you’re doing it for everyone’s health.

If you’re self-isolating together:

Get ready for the day like you usually do- It’s easy to ditch your regular routine when you’re home all day with your sweetie, but sitting around in your underwear watching Netflix is only fun for so long. So get up, take a shower, get dressed, have a meal, and it’ll help pass the time and make things feel more normal.

Have your own separate spaces, even metaphorically- Even if you’re stuck in a small space with your S.O., you can give each other some space. There’s no need to feel like you have to entertain each other 24/7 just because you’re living together 24/7 right now.

Do fun things together- Spending every waking moment together can get old, even with the one you love. So try to find fun things to do around the house, like a project you’ve wanted to work on, playing badminton in the yard, or a living room dance party, whatever you guys are into.

Let little things go- When you’re confined with anyone, small things they do are bound to get on your nerves at some point, but try not to hold a grudge. You’re stuck with each other and you’ll feel better being nice.
