President Trump says Turkey has agreed to make the ceasefire on the Syria-Turkey border permanent.
Speaking today at the White House, Trump announced that U.S. sanctions against Turkey are being lifted.
Trump reserved the right to re-impose sanctions, if necessary.
The President noted that there will be a 'safe zone' and argued that the volatile region will become more stable.
Trump defended his recent decision to withdraw U.S. troops from northern Syria, a move that prompted fierce, bipartisan criticism in Congress.
American forces were helping Kurdish forces combat ISIS. Trump said 'Let someone else fight over this long, blood-stained sand.'
The U.S. withdrawal prompted Turkish military action against the Kurds and a temporary ceasefire.
