In some cities, getting a child into a good day care is a serious pain. With many parents willing to do anything just to get their kids into a great program...the question becomes: how far is too far? The mom in question is an atheist, but they are on so many waitlists for day care she's considering joining a church to better their chances at getting their kid into one.
Her hubby isn’t exactly on board, calling it “horrific abuse,” especially “since I am directly benefiting from a community I don’t belong in and would not be a part of without the daycare.” So mom posed the question to the “Care and Feeding” section at "Slate." The answer? The journalist thinks that as long as the church has values the parent thinks are “appropriate for the child” it’s probably not all that bad.
Plus, the writer adds that many churches realize such parents are joining just for the day care possibility, noting many of them are “keeping the lights on by contributions from uninterested parents hoping to get a leg up on the competition.”
